Daily reading: Saturday 7 November 2026

Today’s theme: helping agents understand code, and checking their work. Two threads from this week come together: cutting agent token costs, and Netflix-scale engineering. Your Postgres and DuckDB picks also merge into one story.

  1. Understand any codebase instantly, with up to 99.7% fewer tokens (Agent Native, from a writer you subscribe to) It turns a repository into a graph you can query, so the agent pulls only what it needs. Relates to: yesterday’s “Cache engineering” and Wednesday’s “31% cheaper Claude Code”. It’s a third way to cut agent cost, this time through retrieval. It also builds on Monday’s knowledge-graph article, applied to code instead of events.
  2. The lifecycle of LLM-as-a-judge: building, aligning and monitoring at scale (Netflix TechBlog, 16 min) Relates to: Monday’s Netflix observability knowledge-graph article, from the same company. It also fills a gap in this week’s harness picks: how you check an agent’s output once it’s running.
  3. AWS just put DuckDB inside PostgreSQL (KanishkSingh, 5 min) Relates to: Tuesday’s “DuckDB 2.0” and Monday’s “Just use Postgres is getting easier”. Those two picks turn out to be the same story.
  1. Linus Torvalds didn’t expect this when AI started reviewing Linux (Noah Byteforge, Level Up Coding, 4 min) It says the kernel got better while the release process got harder. Relates to: Sunday’s “Anthropic ditched Git after agents pushed 30,000 changes a day”. It’s the same pressure from agent volume, at the biggest open-source project.
  2. What is the best local LLM for Mac in 2026? (M1 to M6) (Anubhav, Data Science Collective, 12 min) Relates to: your local-models interest, and Ollama, which I saw installed on your Mac. It’s a practical companion to this week’s cost-cutting pieces.
  • 15 self-hosted apps that quietly replaced my paid subscriptions (Sarath S, 17 min). You saved this one.
  • Top 10 self-hosted home server tools (Jesse L, 17 min). You saved this one too.
  • “21 Claude Code environment variables”, “6 open-source projects for AI infra” (listicles); “I used Git wrong for years” (beginner level); the Anatomy and Archify diagram tools (vendor-ish; ask if you want diagram tooling covered); the AI games piece, the LiveContainer iOS tip, and the off-topic stories.

Note: links between pieces are based on digest and email blurbs only.
