Daily reading: Wednesday 4 November 2026
Today’s theme: steering agents with specs, skills and budgets. It follows up on Sunday’s spec-driven pick and this week’s harness articles, plus another data point for your small-native-apps thread.
Read first (about 35 min)
Section titled “Read first (about 35 min)”- Spec-driven development: breaking changes start in the spec (Jaroslaw Wasowski, 16 min) Relates to: Sunday’s “Spec-driven development frameworks a year later”, by the same author. That was the overview, and this goes deeper on one failure mode: when an agent regenerates code from a spec, a single changed word in a requirement can break things.
- Microsoft dropped Claude Code over its bill, then its researchers made it 31% cheaper (Itai Spector, 11 min) This covers TokenEconomizer, a free plugin from Microsoft Research. Relates to: Monday’s “Building the harness around AI coding tools”. Cost control is part of the harness too. It’s a practical counterpoint to the “replace Claude Code with local models” take I skipped on Sunday.
- At under 25 MB, even AutoCAD… (Chimin, 7 min) This is the “AI recreates software” trend, and it’s by the same writer as your Orca and Zed pieces. Relates to: your Electron vs native thread and TinyJS (“a few megabytes”). It’s another example of heavyweight desktop apps being rebuilt very small.
If you have time
Section titled “If you have time”- Claude Bug Hunter (Agent Native, 9 min, from a writer you subscribe to) It argues for named skills over one long conversational loop for security agents. Relates to: the harness articles from Monday and Tuesday. It applies the same idea to security work.
- The “Claude Code killer” hype, six months later: what happened to Pi and Goose (Itai Spector, 8 min) Relates to: the “Forget OpenCode, PI agent harness” piece from your September digest, and Monday’s “OpenClaw or Hermes?”. It’s a useful reality check on agent-stack hype.
- OxiRS: Rust for next-gen knowledge graphs (Monika Singhal, 8 min) Relates to: two of your threads at once, Rust everywhere and Monday’s Netflix knowledge graph article.
Skipped
Section titled “Skipped”- “10 insanely powerful AI tools”, “I gave Claude 10 GitHub repos”, “Claude Code mods: set up these 5 NOW” (listicles); “Prompting is now the slowest way to code” and “Did IBM just kill RAG?” (hot takes); the IcePanel vs Mermaid vendor post; the obfuscated bot-check piece; and the off-topic health and culture stories.
Note: links between pieces are based on digest blurbs only.
